(Apparently) How to Get into Publishing

by Marian Schembari on August 14, 2009

Came across an article today on knol written by UK copy editor, JD. He gives some pretty good advice (from what I can tell) on how to into publishing. To sum up, here are some points he makes:

  1. Be persistentdreamstime 1726579 (Apparently) How to Get into Publishing
  2. Be focused
  3. Widen your search
  4. Location
  5. Consider a course
  6. Train yourself
  7. Read up on the industry

Take a look at the article to get the full picture, but I think he makes some really good points. From the people I’ve spoken with, persistence seems to be the key. Keep in mind: persistent does not mean annoying.

I’m just now learning about widening my search. Right after graduation I applied for jobs at all the big houses, but the longer I’m at it, the more I’m realizing there are a ton of book-related jobs out there I’d never considered. For example, I have an interview next week at a PR firm that focuses solely on books. Can’t believe I’d never thought of that before! And who better to publicize books than those who love them?

Reading up on the industry is obviously the best thing you can do though. I’ve included some great links under Resources that should help you get started. There is a ton of stuff out there (this blog included) that can most definitely help you out!
