12 things I hate about being a grown up

by Marian Schembari on January 23, 2010

I’m developing a Peter Pan complex. When the hell did I become an adult? So just for funsies, here’s a list of things that make me feel really grown up slash want to hug my mommy:

1. I have checked out guys that have the ability (re: are the appropriate age) to wear a wedding ring.

2. Buying shit I assumed just simply existed, whether by fairy dust or daddy’s wallet. Things like toilet paper, detergent and vacuum cleaners. Am I the only one who feels like this is a supreme waste of money? I thought this stuff just came with the territory! (you know, that territory called adulthood)

3. Anything involving insurance.

4. Being too old to trick-or-treat. Scratch that… Halloween as a whole. Actually, holidays in general.

5. Watering my plant. Thank God it’s hard to kill.

6. Understanding the word “mortgage”.

7. Knowing how to spell the word “mortgage”.

8. Using power tools. Who knew drilling = dust all over everything?

9. Not being able to decide if I consider myself a woman or a girl. Am I still in that in between age?

10. Decorating a room from scratch.

11. Making plans to see my friends. It was so much more fun when we were all in the same dorm.

12. Asking what someone “does”. What the hell does that even mean?!

The end.

  • Hmmm...I have a major peter pan complex. #9 is like the story of my life. Especially since my boyfriend is 9 years older than me and anytime I meet his friends and I reluctantly reveal that I'm 23 they go OH MY GOD YOU'RE SUCH A BABY!!!

Then I look around and have friends my age having babies. And unlike when we were 16, it's a. o. k. I am still terrified of all these things...except for Halloween. :) Still go out in costume!!
  • I've had this conversation a few times recently... it just hits you at random moments - "Holy Sh** I'm an adult." Like when I have to drag my laundry down the block to the laundromat to do laundry, or when I buy plan tickets to go visit friends or family, or when paying bills....
  • When we built our house I definitely went through #2. What?? This house doesn't come with a shower rod, toilet paper holders and a mailbox? Are you kidding me?
  • Excellent list.

    Ditto on numbers: 1, 3, 11, and 12.

As far as number 9 goes, that question gave Britney Spears a top 10 hit and helped land her a starring role in a B-list movie. I don't think she ever landed on an answer so don't feel bad if you can't find one either.
  • Honey, if you're not enjoying Halloween, and in NYC no less, you're hanging with the wrong people. That is the most fun holiday in the city! I still have my Naughty Nurse costume that I made for $15 from Goodwill. I do hope you have renter's insurance though. :)
