Contest! Help Me Pick a Tagline

by Marian Schembari on March 19, 2010

I just spent 2 hours staring at my computer trying to think of a clever and smart tagline for my blog. Am getting a fancy new header and I need a bad ass tagline to showcase who I am and why I’m different. But I can’t think of anything that doesn’t sound ridiculous, cocky or sales-y (3 things I hate).

Then I realized that the power of social media is to rally together, right?! So who wants to help a lady out?

Goals:

Short and sweet tagline that combines both what I do professionally and how I incorporate my personality into my blog posts. That’s it. I’ve got nothing. Ideas?

Here are some taglines I ADORE:

The Bloggess: “Like Mother Theresa, Only Better.”

Domestic Sluttery: “The home and lifestyle blog for women who have better things to do.”

Chapman/Chapman: “The Venn diagram of literature, new media, & some cool, mind-blowing 3rd thing.” (this is on his Twitter bio, but whatever)

Contest ends Monday night. Email me, @ me on Twitter or leave a comment. Winner gets a $15 iTunes gift card, and if you could tweet this and spread the love, well, awesome. The more the merrier!

Ready? Set? Go.

UPDATE: And the winner is…. Scott Ripley!!! Telling it like it isn’t. But should be. Think it fits me down to a T and the second I heard it I knew. So thanks Scott, you are the best of the best. The tagline king. As a reward, besides me undying love and devotion, you get presents! And by presents I mean music in the form of a card :)

I want to thank everyone SO SO SO much for all your help. I’m a miserable failure when it comes to this stuff so it was amazing to get everyone’s juices flowing and see how you all see me. And a shout out to Ryan Rancatore: please tell me you do this for a living. A genius, you are.

I wish I could help you! Unfortunately, I'm stuck on the same problem myself. I want to start a blog, but every title I think of sounds cliched, childish, complicated, or downright strange.

Awww you picked my tagline :-) thank you!

The thing about a tagline is that it sums up everything you do, and everything you’re trying to achieve. It doesn’t have to be clever (although that’s quite nifty when that happens), you just need to work our exactly what it is you want your blog, and your brand, to say. I don’t think anyone but you can do that.

If your tagline is written by someone else it’s not you. I think the competition is a great way to get an idea of how people see you and it’ll be great for inspiration. But I bet the final line is one that you come up with yourself. You’ll know the right one when you find it :-)

Ooh I can't wait to see your new header! How about Word Diva?

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

    Hey, it's a fabulous tagline!

I actually really agree with you on this one – I'm just not super creative when it comes to this stuff and figured it would get the ole juices flowing. But you're right, it should be 100% me so we'll have to see how it goes…

  • http://personalbranding101.com/ Ryan Rancatore

OK Marian, you got me interested. Here are a few I came up with. (Hint: I like this sort of thing. A lot.) Good luck, hope you find or think of one that you love.

    Perfecting the Art of Imperfection

Kind of like HBO, but with more cuss words.

A blog even Chuck Norris is afraid to read.

A blog the 9-to-5 crowd can read while pretending to work.

A blog for grown-ups who wish they weren’t.

Famous for getting a job. Trying to avoid getting another one.

……P.S. I didn't Google any of these so it is possible some other bastard thought of them first.

Holy shit Ryan. You're liking an effing genius! I love ALL of these. Problem is going to be choosing one!

  • http://personalbranding101.com/ Ryan Rancatore

OK I thought I had shut my brain off, but two more ideas snuck in. No sense
in keeping them in my head, so….

Chicken soup for the rebellious soul.

Kicking your ass one keystroke at a time.

P.S. again, don't mean to make you sound like some sort of she-devil, if
that is how these come across. Oh great, now I'm thinking of taglines that
    incorporate “she-devil”…

Hey Marian, Glad to see the responses so far. I'm assuming you're keeping your name on the header. Here are some suggestions:

    —Writing the Social Media Wave

    —New Media. Traditional Spunk

    —Word Crafter. Social Media Preacher

Good luck with the redesign. This was lots of fun.

I realize I am late to this discussion, Marian, but “Telling it like it isn’t. But should be” implies negativity and evokes confusion. Why would you want to tell what something is not?

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Ari, you are VERY late to this discussion and I adore my tagline. That said, I chose it almost a year ago when my blog was really just a personal blog. In revamping my business I will – unfortunately – have to change it to something that actually implies what I do.

As for the negativity, we’re going to have to agree to disagree on that one. And if you haven’t noticed from my writing, I’m not the most positive happy-go-lucky girl on the planet. The tagline I chose last year fits my personality and writing style perfectly. It’s served me well.
