“Critique My Profile”: I’m giving away free advice!

by Marian Schembari on June 12, 2010

Thanks for stopping by! Make sure you sign up for my FREE newsletter. Get free consulting and all sorts of goodies delivered straight to your inbox. (It’ll be awesome.)

Over the past month I’ve been getting more and more emails from people requesting that I critique or evaluate their social media profiles. Now, this has kind of been my job for the past year – helping authors and friends and companies expand their online presence – but that always involves implementation, months of work and commitment like you wouldn’t believe. Some of you simply want personalized tips and tasks you can do RIGHT NOW that are going to help you grow.

As one request said, “There is always room for expansion. You mention being able to help people do better with social media and I’d like to know if you see any area where I could do something different that might be more effective.”

Rachel Vincent commented on my Twitter post asking if there was “a service where a human being who is really solid with Twitter would look at Twitter profiles and tell people: ‘Hey this is how you are coming across’. Kind of like the services that evaluate resumes and let people know how they are coming across there.”

Genius, I tell you! And I don’t know anyone else who’s doing it and I don’t know why I didn’t think of this myself. Enter “Critique My Profile”. (I was gonna call it Pimp My Profile, but that was taken. Le sigh.)

So Here’s How It Works

1.   In the comment section, post your Twitter handle.

That’s all I need, but you can ask anything you want about how to grow your presence, tweak your bio, modify your tweets… The sky’s the limit and I am open to any and all questions.

2.  Then I post a weekly video critiquing different profiles.

This is where the fun part comes in! Every week I’ll post a short video critiquing a different Twitter account. Keep in mind the tone of my blog: this is how I’ll be “on tape”. If you’re nervous about being torn to shreds, don’t worry, I’m not that bitchy… But I AM no-nonsense and this is a Bullshit Free Zone. So if you can’t take a decent criticism, don’t leave your info.

That being said, I hope that doesn’t scare you away. If you’re smart enough to be using Twitter, but feel like you’re not using it to the best of your ability, I know I can help. So get over yourself a little and take the plunge. In order to get the most out of social media you need to be willing to put yourself out there. If you’re scared to do it here you shouldn’t be doing it at all… And I honestly do want to help you kick some social media ass.

That’s it!

Doesn’t matter if you’re a brand-new Twitter user or you’ve been tweeting for a year. There is always room for growth and having a fresh pair of eyes look at how you’re presenting yourself can be ridiculously beneficial for your brand, business, whatever.

**It would, however, be helpful if I knew your goals. A truly great Twitter bio makes it blatantly obvious what you do or what you want to be doing. If you think your Twitter profile isn’t as up-to-date as it should be, let me know in the comments how I can best help you.

***And if you would be so kind to RT this, that would be reeeaaaalllly helpful. I want to reach as many people as possible with this, so spread the word!

I have 2 blogs/projects and 2 twitter accounts. the first one @gypsygirlsguide i had been slowly building up. the second is brand new as I just launched my new site @alessandracave. I'm now taking gypsygirlsguide to a new level (from personal blog to bohemian lifestyle) and while that re-structuring is in progress, I'm focusing on promoting alessandracave so it gets a bigger audience. in the first week i launched alessadracave, I doubled tweets in both accounts to get the most exposure for alessandracave. but since then, in respect for those who subscribe to both accounts, i'm already trying to tweet separately based on subject matter that applies to each account. i was torn about having only one account for both projects. but i hope for them to grow distinctively. Thoughts? Please don't rip me apart ;)

  • Rachel Vincent

Hey Marian! I am super excited about this. Of course I want my twitter profile checked out and would love feedback: @rachevincent

My goals: I created this account as a way to 1. connect on a more personal level with bloggers/writers/editors/tweeters etc who might be interested in Kikini when it launches and as it grows (because I really believe in personalization) 2. create a way for me to be easily accessible to anyone that wants to connect re: Kikini 3. make new friends (like you) who are doing interesting stuff and have cool ideas 4. keep in touch with friends I already have 5. share interesting ideas/blog posts/articles that I come across 6. follow companies I like and learn about their latest ideas/deals/updates.

Since my twitter account has both a business purpose and personal purpose, it's hard to decide how to mesh the two and how much to prioritize each. I want to promote Kikini and connect with bloggers and other media sources who might be interested in cool new social media, but I want to remain authentic and be a real person at the same time. Rephrased, I want people to understand that this is a personal account (@kikini is the official Kikini account), but that my Twitter account is also me communicating as a VP of Kikini too. So, here are some of my questions (I'm sure you'll think of other things to bring up, but as I brainstormed what I would want to know, here are some I came up with):

    1. What is your initial impression when you come to my profile? Background? Profile pic? Description?
    2. Does that impression change as you start looking at my tweets?
    3. Do you have advice on my Kikini/personal balance. More or less of each?
    4. As someone who isn't connecting to a specific blog, I just tweet things that I come across that I find interesting. It can be a random mix. Do I need more of a theme or consistency in my tweets? Or, since this is a personal account, does a specific theme matter?
    5. @replies vs. my own posts. What do you think of the balance (because it is a lot about connecting with people, I do a lot of @replies – too many?)
    6. Most of my lists are private as I keep track of my contacts. Is this good? Bad? Doesn't matter?

You are awesome. I can't wait to see where this goes and to hear about all the cool opportunities you get from it!

    @Moribundy for me!

I'm mostly trying to build myself a community of writers (and some friends), as long as an “audience”. I'm a younger writer (barely 20) but I'd like to have a novel finished up in a few years and start trying to get an agent… I know having a platform, an audience is a good thing, so I'm starting early!

    Thank you so much!

    Hi Marian,

I write fiction and my main interest is connecting with writers to promote my blog and the work I'm beginning to publish. The feeds I follow and that follow me have become more and more focused. This is effective as a means to find people with similar interests, but I'm interested in diversifying both my followers and who I follow.

That's a specific question; I'm interested in any feedback you have.
