Stratejoy Celebration!! A little more about YOU…

by Marian Schembari on August 5, 2010

While I occasionally share personal stuff here, the purpose of this site as a whole is to get clients and make some moolah. But when I recently asked you guys how I can make the blog better and more interesting for you, a few people asked for more stories/life updates. Here’s a photo of me and the Kiwi to tide you over until a more London-ey type post (how much do you love his hat?):

I figured the debut of my Season 3 involvement on Stratejoy would be the perfect day to celebrate bloggers as more than just social media or knitting or cooking or rock climbing… whatever their “niche” is, it’s nice to hear more about the person behind the posts!

What is Stratejoy you ask? Only the greatest website in the history of ever. Stratejoy is a website full of awesome and positive energy and is run by the FREAKING GORGEOUS Molly Hoyne. Molly is a Life Coach and Stratejoy is her baby where she’s created The Joy Equation (which I’m currently doing and it’s changing my life) and every few months she takes on a new team of bloggers who chronicle their Quarterlife Crisis, new experiences, struggles, etc etc. It’s pretty brilliant, actually. And this season I’m one of the bloggers! Whooo hoo!

Though as I write these posts for Stratejoy, I’m noticing something interesting – even though my job is awesome and I love this blog, I’m slowly forgetting about the things I adore that aren’t about the internet or social media or freelancing.

More Than You Probably Care to Know

Remember when I wanted to be a pastry chef? Yeah, that dream’s still there. I dragged the boyfriend all the way to Primrose Hill to eat these incredibly delicious cupcakes.

For those of you who haven’t met me, I have a crazy loud laugh. The kind that makes people glare when I do it in public, but there’s no way I’ll ever apologize for being happy.

I’m hardcore into my heritage, even though I’m basically your typical white girl – 2nd or 3rd generation depending (Dad is Italian, Mom is Puerto Rican). Doesn’t matter, I love me some tostones and I still pretend I can speak more Spanish than I actually do.

I can’t live with out travel or nature – two things I’ve been sacrificing ever since I started off on my own. Secretly (but I guess not to secretly now) I want to live in a little cabin in the woods and spend my life baking, hiking and going traveling awesome and new every month.

I hate any form of “working out”, but I could go for long walks all the live long day. I love big dogs like huskies and greyhounds and mastiffs. I hate little yappy dogs and I want to stab them in their little yappy faces. I’m by no means a girly girl, but I own about 50 different dresses and feel the need to decorate every space I’ve ever lived in with Christmas lights. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I don’t have a favorite color. Raisins in anything make me crazy enough to scratch out my eyes. Way to ruin granola, raisins! God! My family is nutty and loud and a little frustrating but they’re also significantly more awesome and bad ass than your family. My brothers own my soul but they don’t know it.

Sometimes I hate technology. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes I never want to hear the word “tweet” again. Sometimes I can spend hours teaching other people how to rock out and think to myself: “Holy hell. My job is awesome.”

Maybe it’s all about balance. Maybe it’s simply about remembering who I really am.

So check out my first post on Stratejoy! Hopefully the site will be a new haunt for you all – I promise it’s the cat’s pajamas.

Your Turn Now!

Most of you guys have your own blogs, but even if you don’t, I want to know: What makes you…. you? Give me a cool fact or story or interesting quirk that you might never have shared otherwise. Let’s celebrate being awesome!

What makes me ME is different, but also similar to what you've shared. 1st generation, Mediterranean background and yes, big loud laugh that I can't (or wouldn't even want to) control. I've been bitten by the social media bug, but worry some days that it will take over my life!

This all happens in the gorgeous city that nourishes my soul, Vancouver; where I live with my guy, a ton of books and my trusty laptop. Also, like you, I dream of having a Mac in my sweaty lil' hands.

In the 3 months since jumping into Twitter-land, a few people have stood out for me – YOU are one of them. Thanks for shining so brightly that I noticed all the way from the West Coast!

Marian, I can never cook for you, because raisins are my absolute favorite and I put them in EVERYTHING. Granola: of course. Oatmeal: every time. Salads: yes yes yes! Rice pudding. Stir fry. Etc. etc. etc. Seriously. I call them my secret ingredient.

What makes me “me” is what I want to be next. When I was a teenager I wanted to be a solider, once in the military I wanted to travel. Backpacking in the jungles of S. America I decided to … etc., etc., etc.
Of course not all the pieces fall into place – but that's part of the fun.

Now, I have a career, a great family and…I wanted to start a book review blog – LOL.

For one thing I also can't stand raisins! I've been known to spend far more time and effort picking them out of food than it takes me to eat the item in question…

Other quirks: I can't ride a bike (no balance), my favorite color is orange (like enthusiastically… I even have orange bath towels), and when people say to “go to your happy place” during relaxtion/stress management seminars, mine is playing the piano.

Those cupcakes look sooo good by the way – very envious!

Hey, yappy dogs are people too, y'know! (OK, *almost* people.) I'm with you on the raisins though. Can not stand 'em. I don't know if this makes me especially unique, but those dreams of big home-owning that a lot of people have are really not my dream. I love the idea of living somewhere small but perfectly formed, with great transport links, and the ability to travel on a regular basis. I would *much* rather live in a shoebox in the city than a mansion in the country. The idea of living with very little stuff really appeals and I love looking at small, cute homes.

omg, I love you! I really can't wait to meet you in person (which we are going to do). I also hate to work out but love long, long walks. And I've been to the Primrose Bakery! I didn't know it was famous, though… oops. We need to meet up before you disappear into the great down under and start speaking some form of English that I can't understand.

    xoxoxo

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

I know, we REALLY need to get on the whole meeting-in-person thing before I head out of the UK. And yeah, Primrose! Woot! It's not SUPER famous, but I'd heard awesome things – hence, dragging the boyfriend totally out of the way for 2 cupcakes ;-)

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Ugh ::shudder:: I HATE yappy dogs! Glad more people are in on the raisin thing though ;-)

I TOTALLY know what you mean about not owning a big home, that's never been a dream of mine either. Thanks so much for sharing, I love knowing a little more about you guys!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

I will literally pick through my granola for way longer than is necessary to get rid of every last raisin. Blech.

You can't ride a bike?! What a great quirk – I love it! This is fabulous, I'm learning so much about you guys, I'm so glad I asked!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Hey man, big dreams — keep working for them and good luck with the blog!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

LOL. Apparently we can never eat in the same room with all those raisins you're using! That's my biggest nightmare ;-)

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

    Hey, we're like twins, man!

I've always wanted to go to Vancouver – sounds like my dream city. Maybe someday I'll meet you there in person!

Wait, meet in person?!? please tell me you're kidding. … and if not, i suggest we plan a trip together. because, i kind of cant think of something more awesome. I LOVE long walks too! Switzerland = walking heaven…. Sweden / England makes for good walks too though.

Hmmm – #funfact about me, you don't yet know?

I hate Thursdays and the smell of chocolate makes me nervous.

Thursdays – had my weekly English lessons on Thursdays as a child. Hated it. Had some sort of “stomach or head ache” every thursday to avoid having to go. I'm all good with English now, I mean I wouldn't have met you if I didn't learn the language… but hatred of Thursdays continues.

Chocolate – Switzerland failed, still kind of fails, in the whole preschool department. Working single moms don't exist according to the gov't?! Anyways, so Lindt (as in the chocolate factory) is super advanced & ahead of the game and had a preschool for their employees way back when i was little. Mom managed to get me in there somehow. Awesome. Except I shall forever associate the smell of chocolate with those first moments being away from mommy….

Haha this IS a fun post :) I do have my own blog, but I will share something you probably don't know about me from there :)

I'm a little bit obsessed with electronic music and secretly (or not always so secretly) have wanted to be an electronic music DJ/mixer since high school. I tend to follow my idols around from clubs in LA to Bonnaroo Music Fest to interviewing some locals in my own backyard. Sometimes it's the only thing that keeps me going all day!

You are so cute – you never really post that many photos!

“Sometimes I hate technology. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes I never want to hear the word “tweet” again. Sometimes I can spend hours teaching other people how to rock out and think to myself: “Holy hell. My job is awesome.” Oooohh so true. Went on vacation last week and my friend's parents house didn't have net. I was simultaneous confused and overjoyed.

Fun fact about me? Uh… I eat or drink at Panera over 5x a week.

  • http://twitter.com/cassie_wallace Cassie Wallace

Yes!! How can all these girlies NOT like raisins!??

  • Janet W

Quirky? I was a gold nugget on a float in the Klondike Days parade — celebrating the Gold Rush — in Dawson City, Yukon Territory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dawson_City . And I'm addicted to wiki and learning more about things I care about.

Great enterprise you have going here. My fave — your YouTube tutorials on Twitter. I defy anyone to watch, learn and listen and then not immediately change their twitter bio. Oh, sorry, their must valuable piece of twitter real estate :)

You're not alone in the love of electronic music! Sometimes words just get in the way of the beats you know?

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Ahahahaaaa! That's an awesome fun fact, Janet!

And I'm so so glad you're finding those videos helpful, and thanks for spreading the word ;-)

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

    Yes! GREAT fact, girly!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Oh Livi, HOW did I not know any of this stuff about you? Those are wonderful stories and I'm so glad you shared!

    Love you BUCKETS.

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Electronic music, huh? That is freaking awesome! It's weird how something that can be a great passion or fun fact can get lost on a blog due to settling in a “niche” or something. Anyhoodle, I think it's GREAT that you're so into electronic music and that you seem to go eveyrwhere to follow that passion. Woot! Also, I think you totally should be a DJ. Just sayin'

Oh my gosh. This is so fun!!! (And you're right- there is so much out there that's not “online”) You've got to live life in order to be able to write, and comment, and capture it!

WELCOME to Stratejoy. We're flippin' lucky to have you.

And something you don't know about me? I went to university to pole vault, got a really nasty bout of mono and bum knees, and never ended up as a college athlete. But I do have a gold medal from the Junior Olympics!

My teeth itch when I get nervous.

Love Stratejoy – thanks for suggesting it!

P.S. – Can you tell I haven’t been on the interwebs in DAYS and I’m catching up on all my online reading? Thus the delayed commenting on all your posts!
