What Your Twitter Numbers Say About You, part 2

by Marian Schembari on August 4, 2010

Tagging along from yesterday’s post, let’s talk about how to keep up with all those people you follow. My own Twitter strategy involves 10-15 minutes every morning responding to @ replies, retweeting articles I found the day before, writing my own stuff and scheduling it all so it looks like I’m on Twitter all day. Most days I slip up and will sign in for 5 minutes at a time, but it doesn’t consume my life.

How? Lists and HootSuite, baby.

Keep Up With Your Numbers

If you find it difficult to keep up with more than 100-odd people, then don’t follow more than that. Social media shouldn’t feel forced – us addicts can sniff out a fake from a mile away. Keep in mind though that unless you’re Beyonce, limiting the number of people you follow will limit the number of people who follow you.

I can tell you though that following over 1,000 people is incredibly overwhelming and you’ll never keep up with them all. That’s why I use HootSuite and obsessively made and followed lists to keep my followers in check. Take a look at my HootSuite dashboard (click to enlarge):

How to Organize

Here’s a screenshot of my HootSuite Publishing tab:

As you can see, the incredible Ron Hogan created these lists. I’m too lazy  to troll though all the authors ever, and Ron had them categorized by genre, so all I did was follow the list and add it as a tab. Easy peasy! Every so often I check out my publishing tab to see what these authors are up to. I don’t necessarily follow them all, but I do keep an eye on what they’re talking about.

So there are ways to make Twitter less overwhelming and my rule applies to everyone: Get organized. Create Twitter lists. Like I said, I personally like HootSuite, but that’s because my computer is a grandma and can’t handle a desktop download.

It’s hard to go through all your followers and start listing, so organize the people you engage with first. I have a list of all the people who I regularly talk to on Twitter. I have another list for people who comment on my blog. Start there and work your way out. Then, the next time you start following someone, see if they can fit into a list. Here’s a screenshot of my Blog tab. It includes columns of all the people I talk to regularly, clients, blog readers… This is my most important tab and you should create something similar to make sure you’re not missing info from those who engage with you the most:

Doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, organize people you’re following into groups. For example:

  1. People you “speak to” regularly
  2. Blogs/publications you read
  3. Hobbies
  4. Friends
  5. Social media people (we’re all following them!)

These are just some ideas to get you started. Many obsessive list makers think you should organize by the most basic categories, i.e. “authors”, “newspaper” and “agents”. While helpful, I’ve found it easier to organize people based on my relationship with them. Make sense?

The screenshots should help show you how I keep up-to-date with everyone I follow, not just those I see while I’m online in the morning.

Some Thoughts to Keep in Mind

If I see someone I might want to follow and they happen to be following very few people I think, “yeah, they’re never going to follow me back” so I don’t follow them at all. So while it is nice to look more important than you are, remember that Twitter is about relationships. It’s not about how many numbers of people are exposed to your message, but how many people care about that message at all.

The only reasons I would follow someone who doesn’t follow very many people is if the content they put out is so freaking fantastic I couldn’t possibly live without it. How many of us are actually doing that?

There is so much information out there on how to organize followers and how to save time and how to be productive, blah blah blah. But I wanted to give you the bare bones. HOWEVER, if you have specific questions I’m more than happy to address this in the comments section. Ready? Set? Go!

This is a fantastic tip, Marian! I'm clicking on HootSuite right now to start organizing. It will be very helpful.
One question: you mention you schedule it all so it looks like you're on Twitter all day. How do you do that? Is there a setup that allows you to set time for posts?
And also, how often do you check each list? How often do you go through your followees and clean it up? I would love to know more about the mechanics of it.

Once you get on HootSuite you'll see how easy it is! Basically just type in your tweet, but instead of hitting “Send Now” click on the little icon that looks like a calendar. It just says “30″ and when you hover it says “Schedule Message” – then you can schedule the date and time you want your tweet to go out! As far as I know there's no limit to how many tweets you can schedule. I usually have 20 tweets pending on any given day but I know people who have scheduled hundreds!

It depends on the list, but I check my home feed every day, same with my Blog tab and Stratejoy tab (an awesome site I'll be blogging for soon!). The publishing tab I check once a week – it depends. There are a lot of people on it that I don't know.

I clean out followees once a month. I use Tweepi to do a big unfollow of people who are no longer useful, rarely tweet, etc etc. Hope this helps!

Hey Marian – You're going to be ashamed of me, but I haven't signed up with hootsuite or one of their competitors yet. I keep waffling between platforms to use… I finally decided to go with Hootsuite last week but still haven't “gotten around to it.” But after reading through this, I'm finally ready to admit it needs to be upped on my priority list. It's awesome that you can get away with 15 mins in the morning … I spend WAY too much time on Twitter throughout the day. Anyway… may be sending some questions your way….

Thanks for this great information. I do have a question though…I am unable to figure out how to create tabs. I went to the help section, but it wasn't much help. I've looked at your screenshot and mine doesn't look anything like that. There are plenty of instructions on how to add tabs but you have to have tabs already to add them. Confused…can you help me?

    Thanks so much,
    Mona

Ah yes, FANTASTIC just as I expected! ;) Thank you for the awesome tips. I have definitely felt overwhelmed with Twitter lately, and this has given me what I need to get it organized to the point where it doesn't overwhelm me anymore.

I LOVE the idea of scheduling tweets and have heard about it before and ATTEMPTED to do it myself, but found it overwhelming as well and couldn't seem to start a system that worked for me to do it. You mentioned you schedule tweets for articles you read the day before, etc. Do you keep a doc with those articles, bookmark them, or something else? I'd love to know how you organize that part of it… ;)

Thank you for this. I signed up for hootsuite and got everything set up with lists under specific tabs. Definitely controls the firehose of tweets! One question: If you have your homefeed set up, an also have your followers arranged in relevant lists, then you end up reading those tweets twice. I can't eliminate the homefeed, b/c the lists don't include what they re-tweet. How do you manage that?

Totally agree – I get overwhelmed following too many people. I recently started using Hootsuite, and love it! Next step: getting all my lists onto it so I can stop using twitter.com forever.

  • http://eemusings.wordpress.com/ eemusings

Once you add your twitter account to hootsuite, a tab for that account will appear. Then you can click the plus sign next to the tab to add more

Personally, I have hootsuite open pretty much all day@ If I read something awesome that I want to tweet for later, I just enter it in and schedule it for later on. I tend to find a whole bunch of interesting articles at once (say on my lunch break) and I don't want to bombard everyone with them all, so I space them out throughout the afternoon.

Haha, go you! Sometimes I still use Twitter.com – It's easier for me to send DMs, I always look at a person's profile on the webpage when deciding whether or not to follow them and some applications require you to RT from Twitter directly. But all in all my Twitter life has been SO SO SO much easier since using HootSuite.

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Haha, not ashamed! I remember going to a DBW conference in January and EVERYONE was using TweetDeck and I was still on the Twitter.com homepage. It's totally about when you feel comfortable switching over. I had to learn Twitter 100% before I was like, “okay, time to schedule this bitch.” Not that I'm using HS I can't imagine ever NOT using it – it's so much easier this way!

You know you can always email if you have questions! Laura Roeder has an amazingly simple video on getting started with HootSuite: http://bit.ly/929Sa6

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Yeah, you'll see their tweets twice. I haven't found that to be much of a problem though because I rarely look at the home feed. Sorry I can't be of more help on this one!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Excellent question. I actually use StumbleUpon a lot and will occasonally go back to my SU favorites and just schedule a bunch of cool RTs in one go. Sometimes I write an email to myself if I want to remember a link. But MOSTLY I use “Read It Later” – the greatest Firefox plugin ever: http://readitlaterlist.com/

I just tick the sites I like and they're super accessible whenever I want to access them from HootSuite when I want to do a major scheduling session.

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Hmmmm… If you want to email me a screenshot of your HootSuite dashboard I'm more than happy to take a look and give you some instructions (maschembari at gmail).

That makes sense – I might try that, since I often keep it open as well. :) Thanks for the tip!

  • http://www.jessilicious.com Jess Webb

I haven't really gotten into using SU – maybe I should try it. ;) And I'm definitely checking out the “Read it Later”!

Thanks for the tips, Marian! :)

This is very helpful to me all the tips here as well as in part one, I'm not sure what category I fall into, I will have to go and check.

I have to say I am not as seasoned with twitter as you are, but I have been wondering about HootSuite since I get overwhelmed easily. Thanks for the info on that, I was using Thwirl, but not organized like it seems HootSuite is.

I love this post — and thanks for the screenshots :-) Question – does anyone else find that HootSuite is very slow to load? I find it very cumbersome to scroll through, open tabs, etc., whereas other sites/programs are much quicker…

Hello! Nice article! I'm a big fan of Hootsuite too. Something that I really like is you can create your own searc columns. I use them to keep an eye on some releveant keywords and on mentions of my blog (if you search for your domain name, twitter search will actually look into shortened links [at least bit.ly] and return links to you).

  • Jackie

Hey Marian! I had a minor question about social media, and I thought I would ask you since I know you're an SM guru essentially… Have you ever or will you ever do a blog about your favorite sites that make social networking more efficient? I'm basically new to the game and had never even heard of HootSuite but it looks like it makes twittering so much easier and I was just wondering if there are any others that you'd recommend? Sometimes all the content from Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, etc. is overwhelming and anything that makes it simple is awesome. Thank you! and keep up the great work!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

I might — I hadn't thought about it! However, I am about to launch a newsletter consultancy (as soon as I figure out a better name) and I can absolutely address that. What a great idea!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Oh man, organization makes all the difference!

  • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Sometimes. I definitely don't like A LOT about HootSuite, but there are no other good web-based programs out there so I stick with it. Everyone seems to adore TweetDeck, but downloading it slows down my computer.

  • Jackie

Thank you! I tried to find it somewhere on the internet and I'm shocked at the lack of information out there for newbies who want to advance fast without a bunch of trial and error… so you'd definitely be ahead of the game! Keep us posted!

Thanks for this! I am checking out Hoot Suite now. I love exploring new gadgets, and this one looks like it’ll be a lot more useful than TweetDeck.
