Phew! Twenty-four hours is a long freaking time to travel, but I find myself in complete awe that just the other day I was in New York and now? I’m in New Zealand, baby! Honestly, I still can’t believe I’m here.
The flight over on Thursday was moderately uneventful, though I did have a mini panic attack on the Los Angeles to Auckland flight, mostly due to my fear of flying, a previous six hours on a plane and the thought that I was stuck in a death box over the Pacific Ocean for thirteen hours. Nothing a few Advil PMs didn’t fix.
So after the Flight of Horrors, Sam (my Kiwi man) and I landed safe and sound in Auckland. One successful (!) trip through immigration later and we were smooching and hugging Sam’s parents and en route to their lovely home in Browns Bay.
Because of the serious amount of jet lag Sam and I experienced when going from London to New York (mostly due to frequent afternoon naps) we were determined to see the day through. So I got a tour of the family home – complete with pool and vegetable garden – walked along the most beautiful beach I’ve ever seen – complete with active volcano – and ate a lovely dinner with his parents – complete with Pavlova. Basically, the best start to our new adventure.
This isn’t a travel blog, but I’m so bloody excited to be here and I’ve never seen a country so damn green. You’ll just have to excuse the change of pace. I promised a bunch of you photos so check out the little collage I made of images from yesterday afternoon’s trek to Mahurangi, an amazing reserve just 30 minutes from my new home:
I wish my photos could do this country justice, but they just can’t. If you haven’t been here, use your imagination (and maybe come visit) and if you have, then you understand the wide-eyed look I’ve permanently adopted. Also? Leave a comment with your favorite place in NZ… I’ll be sure to go!
More social media stuff and interviews and updates to come, but allow me a few days to get over the crazy jet lag. In the meantime, share your favorite place, a great travel story or New Zealand trip for my reading pleasure. I need something fun to occupy my time while I procrastinate ;-)
