My boyfriend, who is supremely awesome, bought me a Kindle for Christmas. Unfortunately, I now pay zero attention to him and just read on my pretty new toy all day.
Of course, I also took this opportunity to dress up said toy with a fancy case. I spent hours trolling Amazon for covers and settled on one from M-Edge. But when I went to order, Amazon wouldn’t ship to New Zealand. Bummer and a half.
I reluctantly went to the M-Edge store, only to find it was the same price (I always function under the illusion that Amazon is cheaper – wrong!) AND they shipped to me. Yippee! In my glee, I tweeted out to my followers:
In the process of finding M-Edge’s Twitter profile, I read their bio: M-Edge Accessories is a leader in high quality and stylish e-reader accessories. Save 20% on your next purchase here http://bit.ly/aLw5mJ
Two things came to mind when I read this:
- Poop! I already ordered and could have saved 20%. Lame, but whatever.
- Um… genius?
Pay with a Tweet is a service I’ve tried, liked and have yet to understand why it hasn’t caught on like wildfire. The premise is this: You have a product/service/discount code and people get that “item” by tweeting out the details to their followers. Once they do, they get a PDF download link or code that pops-up on the screen. I used it on my post, The Ultimate Blog Checklist, which continues to get high traffic because people are consistently sharing it so they can get the PDF checklist I made.
Why M-Edge Is Crushing It
Despite already submitting my order, I tweeted out the promo, hoping to get the discount knocked off my order anyway. After a quick email explaining the situation, a woman named Sarah responded the day after Christmas to say she’d taken care of it. Making that simple click of a button a $10 tweet. AND Sarah was lovely, thanking me for spreading the word.
What M-Edge has done is offered up something awesome for their potential followers and all you need to do is tell your friends about it in return.
So I spent more time on their feed. While I’m surprised they don’t have thousands of followers, they’re doing a fantastic and all-encompassing job. They tweet about more than just their product, created a YouTube channel, send out product photos and tweet interesting stories like this one about a man who disguised his wife’s Kindle as an accounting book for Christmas.
On top of all this, Victoria, the woman who runs the Twitter feed, reached out to me to start a conversation about which cover I ordered and shared her favorites. All in all, I’ve seen waaay too many companies ruining social media and M-Edge is engaging, interesting, relevant and making an obvious effort to use the variety of tools available, creating more than just a profile, but that elusive “presence.”
4 Tricks to Steal From M-Edge
- Offer a discount or download link in your Twitter bio and get promoted in the process (see another great example from author Idabel Allen),
- Talk to everyone (who’s not a spambot) who mentions you,
- Answer emails immediately, politely and thank customer for supporting you,
- Send out tweets related to your industry without aggressively pimping your product.
Anyone else totally impressed? What’s your favorite company doing on Twitter?
