When I first arrived in New Zealand I had the opportunity to meet a far-away blog reader (hi, Esther!). During our bonding sesh I asked her what the big companies in Auckland were doing with social media. She gave me a list of the best and brightest, but warned many of them were just starting out and hadn’t amassed the kind of following you’d get in the States.
Granted, there are 4 million people here in 300 million in American, but that’s neither here nor there.
During our talk, the lovely Esther took me to one such place (they sell things you consume in a food-like fashion) in the CBD that shall remain nameless because I’m not stupid enough to burn all my bridges yet. Apparently they were rocking social media and I couldn’t wait to look up what they were doing when I got home to Lucy.
Well, we walked up to Nameless and it was closed. On a weekday. At lunchtime.
Do you know why they were closed?
Because they were FILMING.
FOR A YOUTUBE VIDEO.
TO GET MORE CUSTOMERS BY USING SOCIAL MEDIA.
Just pause…. Think about it…
Don’t let social media get in the way of people actually buying your product
You can create amazing YouTube videos to your hearts content. You can tweet your face off and run Facebook contests and FourSquare until your nose bleeds.
But if that stuff comes in the way of actually running your business….
That’s what we in the internet world like to call a fail.
