The Best Way to Completely Fail at Social Media

by Marian Schembari on January 24, 2011

When I first arrived in New Zealand I had the opportunity to meet a far-away blog reader (hi, Esther!). During our bonding sesh I asked her what the big companies in Auckland were doing with social media. She gave me a list of the best and brightest, but warned many of them were just starting out and hadn’t amassed the kind of following you’d get in the States.

Granted, there are 4 million people here in 300 million in American, but that’s neither here nor there.

During our talk, the lovely Esther took me to one such place (they sell things you consume in a food-like fashion) in the CBD that shall remain nameless because I’m not stupid enough to burn all my bridges yet. Apparently they were rocking social media and I couldn’t wait to look up what they were doing when I got home to Lucy.

Well, we walked up to Nameless and it was closed. On a weekday. At lunchtime.

Do you know why they were closed?

Because they were FILMING.

FOR A YOUTUBE VIDEO.

TO GET MORE CUSTOMERS BY USING SOCIAL MEDIA.

Just pause…. Think about it…

Don’t let social media get in the way of people actually buying your product

You can create amazing YouTube videos to your hearts content. You can tweet your face off and run Facebook contests and FourSquare until your nose bleeds.

But if that stuff comes in the way of actually running your business….

That’s what we in the internet world like to call a fail.

Wow. That sucks. This reminded me of a new restaurant that opened here. The day after it opened we wanted to check it out and it was closed. They have weird business schedules that would change every day. So we just stopped going.

Some people just don’t get it. Too funny.

Heh. Best advice ever. You’d think they would have filmed early on a Sunday morning, or something. Or you know, at a time when they wouldn’t actually be open for business. That’s too bad.

Just like the banks in the 80′s who did everything they could to prevent people from going in and do all their transactions on an ATM. What happened? They realized that they are preventing their customers from meeting their best sales people (after all, banks sell money).

Oh, it really was. I still can’t believe that happened.

There are many ways to be unopened Like having a really intense rich media website that takes more than 20 seconds to load, on available bandwidth connections(still around 2/3 of connections are less than 1 mbyte/sec).

I would have thought it’s one of those things about NZ I put in the file Things_Are_Much_More_Relaxed_Here curse; together with almost the entire country being ‘closed for Christmas’ from 24/12 until 19/01.
    I don’t think I’ll ever get it.

That is soooo funny. It’s amazing how we can get carried away with the whole social media thing but forget that the business comes first, not the promotion. What’s the point of promoting something that’s not open to customers? Crazy.
