Kindle + Blogging = Love. And also? I’m giving away something epic…

by Marian Schembari on March 1, 2011

Remember that post I wrote last month on how M-Edge taught me about social media (and saved me $10) through their fabulous Twitter bio?

No? Go read it.

Now come back.

Okay.

For Christmas, the lovely boyfriend gifted me with a Kindle – a pretty new toy I’ve wanted for ages, but always saw as a luxury rather than a necessity.

See, I love to read. I wasn’t allowed to watch TV growing up and I was five when my dad started reading To Kill A Mockingbird to me at bedtime.

Fast forward twenty years and I’m still a voracious reader. A cheap one, but voracious nonetheless.

However, given my penny pinching and habit of only reading something once, I can’t tell you the last time I bought an honest-to-goodness book. Like, with a cover.

Thanks to my Kindle I’ve finally been able to read for pleasure: $5 bestsellers on Amazon, free classics available online, “rentals” from my hometown library and the folder of eBooks I’ve been downloading care of a few fantastic bloggers.

When a client sends me their book as a PDF, I no longer have to hunch over my screen for hours and instead can curl up in bed or – even better – chill out by the pool during this hot New Zealand summer.

New tech has changed the way I read. Again.

Kindle + Blogging = Love?

Something I haven’t tried, and would really like to, is using my Kindle for actual blogging. Unfortunately, New Zealand is not known for it’s free wifi, but this means I can spend time reading my latest New Favorite Book on the bus into town. I’m not stressing about the whole Kindle-for-bloggers thing because it means I get periods during the day where I let myself take a break.

As corny as it’s sounds, reading for pleasure has meant I’ve sort of gotten my groove back. I’ve been able to put aside work and almost be a kid again. Soooo, with this in mind…

Enter to win an awesome prize!

The wonderful company, M-Edge, has offered up one of their Kindle covers and the compatible booklight for one of you fine readers.

I’ve had mine since day 1 of Project Kindle and I’ve taken her to the beach, on a boat, left her in the hot car and may or may not have dropped her on the driveway. And, still, she’s good as new.

Up for grabs is the Cambridge jacket from M-Edge (suitable for the Kindle 3) along with their fancy e-Luminator book light! Which I sadly don’t have, so am absurdly jealous one of you gets it. If you have a Nook/iPad/etc, nothing to fear! While you won’t snag the Cambridge jacket, my buddy at M-Edge (hi Victoria!) says she’ll hook you up with the cover of your choice.

To enter, just leave a comment below with your favorite book. The one that makes you remember why reading is so important. You’re also welcome to share why you love your Kindle ;-) Just make sure you FILL IN the email address field in your comment. Don’t worry, only I’ll be able to see it, but I do need a way to get in touch if you win!

For an extra entry you can share this post with your followers, tweeting out: I just entered to win an M-Edge Cambridge cover for my Kindle care of @MarianSchembari and @MEDGESTORE: http://bit.ly/eSjKk9 #MEDGESTORE (you can edit the tweet however you want, but make sure to use the #MEDGESTORE hashtag as this helps us keep track of entry tweets).

The winner will be chosen using Random.org on Thursday, March 3 at 10pm EST and the winner will be announced first thing Friday morning! So check back here to see who’s won and if you’re the winner, keep your eye on the inbox for an email from me!

Note: I haven’t been compensated in any way for this post. I really am this in love with M-Edge and think you all deserve something pretty! We all owe a big thanks to Victoria at M-Edge. She is such a freaking star.

Good luck!!

UPDATE 3/4/11: And the winner is… Gareth! He says one of his favorite books is ”Douglas Coupland’s Life After God is definitely up there.” I was also just informed that M-Edge surprised Gareth with an e-Luminator upgrade and was sent their brand new e-Luminator Touch (that they just released this morning!). Congrats Gareth, and thank you all for entering!

I read and have read too much to have one “favorite” books. However, one of my many all-time favorites is CHILDHOOD’S END by the great Arthur C. Clarke.

One of my favorite books that I just re-read is Margaret Atwood’s *Year of the Flood*. Among other things, it’s dryly hilarious, as most of her books are.

  • PattyS

I love m-edge covers also! I have too many favorites also – but one of my favorite/most memorable classic books is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. This one is free for kindle – what a deal!

I love when you can get free books – totally makes my day!!

My favorite book is Where’s Waldo! ‘Read’ it more than 15 yrs ago but still one of those classics i took out once in a while to unwind. =)

      LOL. Great pick, Wx :)

Awwwww!!! *BIG HUG* You are so sweet, Cassie, thank you :)

Matilda by Roald Dahl. I’ve loved it since my mom found it in my school library and suggested it to me.

I love my Kindle to bits though it’s actually making it TOO easy to buy books. I love that I can sync my spot with my iPhone. Now I can read at my clients’ desks without looking like a jerk! Sounds silly, but I spend a lot of time watching computers download updates or install software.

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

YES!! Amen on *both* parts. Matilda (or any Roald Dahl book for that matter) is such a classic. One of the few books I’ve read multiple times.

As for making it too easy – I feel ya. Sometimes I feel like I’m just waiting to finish up my current book because I can’t wait to get to the next one. But out of all the problems to have, “too many books” isn’t so bad ;-)

  • Ryan D

The book I’ve read most often, especially while I was younger, is “Where the Red Fern Grows”. I only got my Kindle a couple months ago, but I love being able to take lots of books on my trips without worrying about what clothes to leave behind so that I don’t go over my weight limit!

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Oh my God, I loovvveeee Where the Red Fern Grows. That was one of my favorites as a kid. Had me weeping every time.

My favorite book that ive read lately is the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, very quick read but a lot of great content

  • Kate L.

This is difficult because I have so many favorites! The Catcher in the Rye spoke to me on many different levels when I read it for the first time (15 years ago!). There is something so raw about the combination of words used to tell the story, and for me, it’s a very emotional experience. I may or may not own more than one copy…

My favorite book? That’s almost an impossible question… I currently have a line from one book tattooed on my right arm to remind me of why books are important: Habent sua fata libelli. It means books have their own fates. The book is called “The Library at Night.” On Thursday, I’m getting an illustration from another book on my left arm – it’s a shark (kind of), from the book “The Raw Shark Texts.” If I had to live on a desert island forever and could only take one book with me, it would probably be Raw Shark, because there are very few other books that have caught me as deeply as that one does. I’ve read it a dozen times and every time I read it, it reveals something else to me (hence the upcoming tattoo – now I’ll never be without part of that book). :)

  • DealKarma.org

Definitely The Poisonwood Bible. Barbara Kingsolver really his it home with this historical fiction piece.

I LOVE my Kindle. It has renewed my love for reading…well…actually i read more now that I EVER have in my life. Probably to date, my favorite books have been Francine Rivers Mark of the Lion Trilogy…but with my new Kindle I am falling in love with more and more books…it is becoming hard to pick my favorite!

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Me too!! Books are coming out of my ears now I’m reading so much. And who says technology will kill the book?!?! Haven’t read either of your picks but will add them to my list now. Thanks for entering!

I love my Kindle too (or should that be 2, as I don’t have the latest one). Anyway, I digress. It’s almost impossible to pick a favorite book, but the book that has made the greatest impression on me recently (and yes, I read it on the Kindle) was Still Alice by Lisa Genova, a novel about Alzheimer’s from the viewpoint of someone diagnosed with the disease. Riveting, depressing and moving.

  • Ellie

I don’t have a Kindle! :( My lovely husband does though and since he has been working so hard lately to rescue my files of our toasted desktop, I’ll enter to win as a ‘thank you’ for him. Can’t choose one favourite book, but one of the books that I will always love is “The Pact” by Jodi Picoult. Not a classic in the traditional sense, I know, but it introduced me to the wonderful writing style of Ms. Picoult and is also a terrific story.

    • http://www.aprilashby.com April Ashby

“The Pact” was so good! Gripped me from the first page and I didn’t put it down until I finished it! Great book.

      Such a sad book.

  • Debbie

Funny, because I just the other day I reviewed “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jamie Ford on Shelfari and the first line of the review was, “This is why I love reading.” The book is truly wonderful and includes many life themes – love and loss, family loyalty, national loyalty. The book made me cry, which no other book as done. I could go on and on. The only thing better about reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet was reading it on my Kindle 3!

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

You know, I’ve been dying to read that book but haven’t had a chance yet. My “pile” just keeps growing :) Thanks for sharing though, I’m definitely going to check it out!!

  • http://www.aprilashby.com April Ashby

I’m a huge fan of “Pattern Recognition” by William Gibson. Also, “Angels and Demons” by Dan Brown is a fave.

As most of the others have said…”I love my Kindle”. Favorite book..wow..so many…but I’ll say any of the Hardy Boy’s series…those are the books that hooked me on reading when I was 8 or 9. I’m almost 40 now and still have the greatest memories of growing up reading those.

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

I love that! Those books we read as children (especially the series) that really taught us how to love books. My mom used to read Nancy Drew to me and I have all the old books. Doesn’t matter how much time goes by!!

  • David

In terms of fiction novels, one of my favorites in the last few years is “Alas, Babylon” by Pat Frank. Oh, and I love the Kindle 3 that I purchased last week!

  • Mythago2

I’d have to say, ‘The Eyre Affair’ by Jasper Fforde. I love all his ‘Thursday Next’ books. His books definitely remind me why I love to read!

  • Paragem

Reading “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon really changed the way I read and what I read. Not only is it a great book (as well as the beginning of a great series), it is what I would call historical fiction with a touch of fantasy. I’m not really sure why I even picked it up, as I was strictly a contemporary fiction and mystery reader (possibly from my start with Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew). But I think all the hype made me curious and, as a result, I can’t get enough historical fiction! My Kindle is now loaded with more historical fiction books than contemporary fiction books. I was a bit surprised to realize what a rut I was in with my reading and thanks to reading “Outlander” I have branched out into many other genres.

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Paragem, I’m literally just finishing up Voyager! I ran into the Outlander series a few months ago and – thank you Kindle – I’ve got them all ready to read now. I LOVE these books – they’ve got everything. Serious history, a little fantasy like you said, lots of smooching. It’s brilliant. Brilliant, I tell you!! So glad you posted this here :)

  • Gareth

not a massive work but I think Douglas Coupland’s Life After God is definitely up there

  • http://www.wicked-whimsy.com Michelle

This is such a hard choice! Argghhh. Well, one of my favorites is Coraline, & probably my favorite trilogy ever is the His Dark Materials trilogy.

I LOVE my Kindle. The only “problem” with it is that it makes impulse spending hard to control…when I know I can have that book on my Kindle in 10 minutes instead of waiting for it a week at the library, and for $10 (or less!)…well, let’s just say I have a very full Kindle now :P

  • http://genevievejoy.tumblr.com Genevieve Joy

In the interest of dressing my fashion-backward ipad, my favorite book (right now) is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. He has the most incredible ability to tell a story and make you live in their world to the point where you actually MISS the characters when the book is over! Word to the wise: don’t read it on the train home unless you don’t mind crying in public. Meanwhile, my can’t stop read is the entire Sookie Stackhouse series. Oh, yes.

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Oh man, I big OH YES to both those books! I just finished reading The Book Thief last month and I fell completely in love. Such a wonderful story and, you’re right, the author has mad skills.

I love me some Sookie, too ;-)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=589231458 Maunette Loeks-Van Patten

Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women was my favorite book. I named my daughter Abigail after Louisa May Alcott’s mother and her middle name is Josephine after the main character in the book.
I have to say that my elementary school teacher Mrs. Siegel is probably to thank for my love of reading. I had a reading level a lot higher than other kids in my class, but a librarian who did not believe that I could read at that level. Mrs. Siegel was fierce! in letting that librarian know that I should be allowed to check out books meant for “the older kids.”

  • Orna Obrien

Favourite book is Now I know why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou – read as an impressionable teenager. Orna

  • Kerry

American Gods by Niel Gaiman!! That book made me want to give up writing, because I knew I could never produce anything as incredible, perfect, moving, and imaginative as American Gods. Poetry in novel format. GENIUS.

I read SO MUCH MORE with my Kindle! I take it everywhere. We’re like best friends. Maybe I should put a ring on it.

  • Mamabear1985

My favorite books are the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder because they are the books that started me on my lifelong love of reading for pleasure. I love my Kindle because it allows me to have my own little 24/7 bookstore right in my hands! No more going to the library or used book sale & wondering about the mystery stains.

  • Amy

My favourite book will always bye Jane Eyre. I’ve strayed into the fantasy genre over the years, and most books I read now are in that category, but Jane Eyre was the first book I can remember reading that sucked me into a character’s life and really made me feel for them.

And I’m not even going to get into why I love my Kindle… I’d be here all day if I did! :D
