Say Hello to the New Digital Account Manager at Young & Shand

by Marian Schembari on May 24, 2011

For the past two years I’ve been freelancing, running my little business, and growing my corner of the web. I’ve worked with artists, fitness trainers, authors and shops. I left a secure gig in Manhattan to try my hand at being my own boss and it led me to London and now, New Zealand. It’s pretty much been the most epic, awesome journey ever.

But this week ended that chapter of my life and I am proud to announce that I am the new Digital Account Manager at an incredible digital marketing agency in Auckland, Young & Shand.

Young & Shand is based out of The ICEHOUSE and pretty much specializes in being awesome. That, and they do rockin’ social media, SEO/SEM, digital strategy, web design and development. And I couldn’t be more blessed with a team who is 100% on Twitter ;-) So take a second and say hello to Duncan, Ben, Nathaniel, Dan and Joanne.

The Next Chapter

Working for myself has been awesome. You can’t beat blogging in your pajamas or going for a mid-afternoon walk, but you also can’t beat working as part of people who are smarter (and significantly better dressed) than you. Being surrounded by people who understand when you talk about creating a user-generated contest. So after multiple coffees with the incredible guys (and lady!) at Young & Shand and a brief trial period, I was asked to join the team full-time on Monday. And even after only two weeks there, I can already tell you I have the best job ever.

As a side note, when I told them I’d be writing this post and asked if there was anything they did or didn’t want me to say and if they wanted to approve it first, the response was, “It’s your blog. Write whatever you want.” How lucky am I?

What to Expect

For those of you who are wondering, yes, this blog will continue as usual. I may have been slack about posting lately, but the changes to my schedule have meant certain things needed to be placed on the front burner. Now that things are a little more scheduled, I should be back with a vengence.

However, I will not be offering my services through Marian Librarian. I’ll be doing the same work, but under the umbrella of Young & Shand, so do drop by their site, have a nosy around, listen to their podcast, and keep your eyes peeled for some new and awesome stuff to come.

Congrats Marian!! This is super cool, seems like a great fit. I hope you’ll share what it’s like to work in New Zealand compared to the USA – could make for an interesting bunch of posts!

Thank you thank you! I actually have a post in my drafts about social media and working in NZ, but I haven’t had the balls to post it yet ;-) Needless to say, things are verrrry different here.

Oh man, that’s EXACTLY what I was thinking – glad you agree :) It’s definitely hard to be a freelancer in the best of times, but in a country where you know no one and freelancing isn’t super common? It’s funny how many more people I’ve met just in the past two weeks of working at the agency (and this is coming from a networking-event-oholic).

Congratulations, Marian! I’m a little sad to see your services disappear from the blog (not least because I loved that Wonder Woman picture) but this sounds like a great new chapter for you. And you’ve illustrated how freelancers can enter the 9-to-5 workforce having already earned their cred, rather than having to “pay dues”. Well done, and good luck :)

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

You know, I actually thought of you as I was deleting those images! It was sort of bittersweet to get rid of my services, but at the same time it’s been soooo nice to sort of have the client stuff taken care off. I just do the work and get paid. No worrying about EVERYTHING that goes on in the business. While I might start up again some day, for now it’s refreshing to learn from people who know more than me and to work for clients with bigger budgets ;-)

      • http://twitter.com/dianeshipley Diane Shipley

Aw! That’s probably the only time Wonder Woman has reminded someone of me ;)
I can certainly relate to just wanting to do the work and not worry about when you’ll be paid, or all the admin involved — I’m sure it’ll free you up to do more great social media work on a bigger scale. Not sure how much you’ll want/be able to talk about here, but will be interesting to hear about if you can.

Good job getting a job!  It’s hard to be an entrepreneur, and you shouldn’t feel this is a defeat.

    • http://marianlibrarian.com Marian Schembari

Wow. Burn. I don’t think I once mentioned in my post that I felt “defeated.” Thanks for your well wishes!
