In my last post I whined about not getting enough sleep, spending too much time online “learning”, having too much on my plate and pretty much having zero life outside of my job. Instead of continuing to whine, however, I decided to actually do something about it by destressing at the end of the day rather than continuing my business education. I recently finished reading Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project and she talks a bit about her love of children’s lit…

First of all, I thought it was just me. I mean, my entire devotion to publishing stems from the fact that all I did as a child was read. My first book was To Kill A Mockingbird and I was five. Books are in my blood.

My favorite thing about reading as a child was pretty much the same reason we all love reading – it takes us away. At the risk of sounding corny as hell, there’s something slightly more magical about reading at 10 than there is at 20. Why is that? Is it that so-called “childish innocence”? Or is it the quality of book? Books that don’t have complicated themes or disturbing scenes? Books that exist pretty much for the sheer pleasure of the story.

The books we read before bed matter

While writing my last post I realized that the books I was reading before bed weren’t helping my sleep problem. Despite copious amounts of sleep-inducing drugs, thoughts were running like mad inside my head. Plans for my business, post ideas, blogging tips, networking advice… It was turning me into that crazy lady who talks to herself on the train.

The problem was that I was reading books like Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s Trust Agents. Tim Ferriss’ The 4-Hour Workweek. Gary Vaynerchuck’s Crush It! All fabulous books, to be sure, but not the lightest of bedtime reading. Even though I’m glad I read these books, I think I need to cool it for a while. And I bet I’ll get more done if I get the sleep I need rather than stressing myself out more by reading all the things I’m still not doing in my business.

So instead…

Instead I took my ass to the library and checked out all that children’s literature I never read. The classics I figured I “missed out on” because I didn’t read them as a kid. Not even realizing I’m still allowed to read them now. Here’s what I got:

Can you believe I'd never read this?

The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle

I also checked out Dealing with Dragons because that was my favorite series (even more than Narnia and before Potter) and for some idiotic reason I gave away my copies. I haven’t reread those books in years and my fingers are crossed I can still feel a little bit of that magic.

Oh, and here’s where you come in: What were your favorite children’s books? Because of the length of most of these guys I’m already done with Tollbooth and looking for my next fix. Some of my all-time favorites include:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

The Lady of the Linden Tree by Barbara Leonie Picard

So? What were yours? What books did you read over and over again that you absolutely must add to my growing pile of childhood to-reads (and subsequently help to save my sanity)?

I was recently hired to do some social media work for an author who is already set up on Facebook and Twitter. Before agreeing to take on the project I took a look at her profiles and saw almost 2,000 Twitter followers and 400 Facebook fans (sounds better than “likers”). My job would be to maintain and grow the fan base as well as engage the already established community.

However, once I logged onto her homepage I was bombarded with spam, which was when I realized whoever she had originally hired to take care of her marketing had completely screwed her over.

How is following spam useful AT ALL? Really. Answer me! I honestly don’t understand.

First of all, the author was following 2,000 people, all of whom promise their followers they’d “get rich quick,” “lose

Ugh. *Shudder*

20lbs overnight!” or “meet a special lady tonight.” Honestly, people.

Apparently, the other company she had hired were late jumping on the social media bandwagon. They assumed the most important thing was numbers, completely disregarding that those numbers would never buy her book because they’re too busy shouting over one another. Didn’t matter that those numbers consisted of spammers and porn. Add to that the fact that many authors don’t know the first thing about Twitter, this asshole company banked on her never knowing about their little spam attack. Unfortunately for them, I took over. Muahahahahahaaa!

Seriously though, I know there are sites out there that can get you thousands of followers for a “modest sum”, but I didn’t know that legit marketing companies use these services and then charge their clients an arm and a leg.

It’s more than just annoying though. What if someone checked out this author’s followers only to find porn? Not only does that not help her marketing plan but could actually ruin her reputation. It’s disgusting and I’m angry and going to write a very angry letter to this company on behalf of (now) my author.

Then there are my issues with auto-following…

As long as I’ve been on Twitter I’ve been under the impression that it’s just good manners to follow anyone who follows you back. But that’s how spam gets in your feed and spam is (obviously – see above) one of my biggest pet peeves.

Guy Kawasaki has this to say about it: “Ignore people who tell you that it’s the quality of your followers not the quantity.” In another article he writes this charming piece of logic:

“Follow everyone who follows you. When I first started on Twitter, Robert Scoble told me to follow everyone who followed me. “But why, Robert, would I follow everyone like that?” The answer is that it’s courteous to do so and because when you do, some people will respond to you and everyone who follows them will see this—which is more exposure for you.”

Sorry Pumpkin, but I disrespectfully disagree. Mostly because your tweets are crap. You tweet way too often and I honestly can’t be bothered to weed through your crap when I’m trying to find out what significantly more interesting (and yes, seriously “less important”) people are saying.

That being said, when I taught my mom how to use the ol’ Twitter, she whined for ages saying, “What!?
As rockin’ as my mommy is, she had a slow time of learning the social part of social media.
I’m really curious what you guys think though. Does my author deserve to get her money back? Should companies that use these methods be called out on their complete and utter lack of social media know-how? What about auto-following?

 Hi Marian,

I don't think it's likely the author will get his/her money back, since despite the minimal effort exerted to create her social media platforms, there was SOME effort exerted. However, I don't think it would be out-of-line to request half or more back - with a note that she's since found a new social media marketing company (ie. YOU) and will discuss the outcome (either way it goes) on those social media channels. If nothing else, that should get a response.
Also, I think we should each be careful who we follow. First of all, it's publicly viewable who you follow. If there is someone you want to follow and don't want the world to know about it, create a private list. But what value is there to following spammers? For that matter, I don't even follow real people who follow me if they aren't talking about anything I'm interested in. I don't really want to know about random stranger's intimate lives–especially if I'm not really sure why I should be connecting with them to begin with. It's like the business card ninja idea in your previous post - you can either create real connections OR create a lot of connections. And real connections are more likely to help you go further.

 Marian;

I completely and totally agree with you on the whole auto-follow thing. I recently heard someone talking about how to set up with some Twitter service (can't remember now which one) and have it automatically follow those who follow you - and automatically unfollow those who unfollow you. That just doesn't make sense to me!

I only want to follow people that I genuinely want to know what's going on with them, or that I get value from what they post. I'm not interested in following EVERYONE who follows me, and particularly those who follow just trying to get you to follow back to grow their own followers! I want to pick and choose who I follow, so that I can actually really FOLLOW them! ;)

As for the companies using these methods - yes, they should absolutely be called out!!! I hate seeing people getting screwed over on that stuff, when there are those of us who do get it and can really help them get actual quality RESULTS from social media, not just spammy sleazy numbers!

Ahahaha, I could easily jump up on a soap box on this topic and others like it... ;) I shall restrain myself to just this little rant... :P

This is Susan. She's pretty.

I appreciate the tactile sensation of a shiny new paperback and hope that publishers never stop printing books. Still, I also love the convenience of ebooks. With a few clicks, I can download an ebook and open up a new world without leaving my apartment or waiting for the FedEx guy. I also love knowing that in many cases, buying a self-published ebook means I’m supporting an indie author like myself.

But as an ebook consumer, I’ve noticed that some ebooks kind of suck. Actually, I’m not sure if they suck or not, because I’ve been so turned off by sucky marketing that I don’t buy those ebooks. Here are five ways to send potential ebook readers running in the opposite direction (and how to avoid these all too common mistakes):

1. Cheap-ass covers. Despite the adage to the contrary, readers do judge books (and ebooks) by their covers. If you want people to spend $9.99 or even $19.99 on your ebook, then it needs a professional-quality cover. Don’t use one of those generic-looking templates you downloaded for free and don’t design it yourself unless you’re a PhotoShop whiz. Befriend a graphic designer, hire a professional, or set up some kind of barter arrangement so you can get a decent-looking cover.

2. Descriptions that read like an infomercial. We’ve all seen those long-winded descriptions that promise to flatten your stomach without dieting or help you earn your first million without breaking a sweat. Oh, yeah, and all these amazing secrets can be yours for just three monthly installments of $29.99. “But wait! There’s more …” No thank you! I prefer humor and authenticity to puffery and excessive promises. And keep it short. If you think you need pages and pages of rhetorical questions (“Wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to XX?” or “Have you ever dreamed about YY?”) and fake-sounding testimonials, then you’re trying too hard.

3. Too much biographical info (or not enough). I don’t give a bleep that your second grade teacher said you were destined to become a famous writer! Or that you make the world’s best fluffernutter sandwich (unless, of course, your ebook is a food-related and you have way to back up this claim). Focus on how the ebook will help readers rather than how it satisfies your ego. On the flip side, though, if I’m going shell out for your ebook, it would be nice to know why I should care about your advice. A few short, well-crafted sentences should be enough to establish credibility without causing eye rolls.

4. Promo pieces that don’t tell you anything. Equally annoying is when an author writes a newsletter or article or blog post under the guise of promoting their ebook, but the piece doesn’t actually say anything useful. There are no tips, no takeaway points, just one long sales pitch leading back to their product and why it will change your life. Shades of an infomercial all over again! It’s a delicate balance, because authors want to give readers a taste of their content and pique interest without giving it all away. (Hopefully this post strikes that balance.)

5. Ebooks that don’t fill a need. When I want light, enjoyable reading, I’ll pick up a new novel from the library and read it on the beach or at a coffee shop. When I want something informative that will help me solve a problem (and that problem can’t be solved with a quick Google search), I’ll order an ebook that I can download immediately and read on my computer. Ebooks should be fun for the author to write and for the reader to digest, but they should also fill a gap in the marketplace and/or help the reader learn a new skill. I don’t believe in writing a book for the sake of writing a book. It should say something new or at least bring a fresh perspective to an age-old problem.

OK, readers. I know you have opinions! What totally turns you off an ebook or other product?

Susan Johnston blogs at The Urban Muse and has contributed to numerous websites including AOL’s Lemondrop, DailyCandy.com, WomenEntrepreneur.com, and WritersWeekly.com. She just released her first ebook, The Urban Muse Guide to Online Writing Markets.

I recently wrote an article for Digital Book World about freelancer jobs in publishing. (Take my post, Freelance Jobs in Publishing: taking advantage of publisher outsourcing, from a few months back and put it on steroids.) In order to add more content and actually provide advice, I put out a HARO request looking to get quotes from freelancers and those who hire them. (I am the sneakiest/most awesomest person ever. I now have about a dozen names of publishing execs who hire freelancers on a regular basis. Genius? Hells yeah.)

Anyhoozey, lots of people responded, but I got a fabulous book of an email from editor Katharine O’Moore-Klopf, of KOK Edit, with a list of the most amazing advice for any freelancer. Unfortunately, I couldn’t use all her tips in my article, so she is graciously letting me reprint some of them here.

So for your reading pleasure, soak up this woman’s ridiculous knowledge:

1. Hand out your business cards absolutely everywhere you go, including such places as banks and office-supply stores; you never know who’ll need your services.

2. Maintain a professional-looking web site: It’s your calling card on the Internet.

3. Keep in constant contact: Find reasons to periodically contact all of your clients so that they remember you. Frequently, the freelancer who gets the call or e-mail for a project is the one whose name is freshest in the client’s mind. Consider producing a very small periodic newsletter that you e-mail or snail-mail to clients.

4. Advertise judiciously: I advertise in the special edition of a Long Island newspaper that’s produced annually for a book fair here, and I have an ad on the web site of the Council of Science Editors.

5. Send out small gifts to regular clients: Once I’ve had a project or two with a particular contact, I send him or her a coffee mug or tote bag or other item with my company name and logo and contact info on it as a thank-you.

6. Put your name and contact info on everything you touch: Develop a signature that you can pop into place easily in each e-mail you send; it should contain at least your name, your company’s name (if you have one), your phone number, your e-mail address, and your web site URL. Every style sheet I produce (those unfamiliar with book editing should take a look at the “Style Sheet” section of this page of my web site) has my logo and contact info on it. If you do hard-copy editing, tape a business card onto the back of the last page of each ms. you edit. For onscreen edits, place your contact info in the document’s properties.

7. Investigate new clients constantly: Absolutely every single time a potential client’s name comes up on an e-mail list, in a news story, in a magazine feature, or anywhere else, search for the company’s web site online. Bookmark it. Find out everything you can about that company. And then set aside a bit of time each week to e-mail or snail-mail or call the companies you’ve checked up on. Let them know you’d like to be of service to them; never ask if they can give you work. In other words, always approach them from the perspective of their needs, not yours.

8. Buy the EFA booklet “Resumes for Freelancers.” Use it to structure your resume as that of a consultant rather than that of an employee.

There you have it. There’s advice all over the web for freelancers, but Katharine has hit the nail on the head with these little gems of knowledge. Hopefully you’ll find them as useful as I have! (And if you have any other tips, or things you wish you knew at my age… by all means, share away!)

Also: Consult an accountant, preferably one who specializes in freelancers (ask around). Recordkeeping, estimated taxes, there's all sorts of businessy things you should know/do throughout the year. Don't wait till tax time--I speak from experience (sobbing on the floor of my accountant's on April 14).

Which makes both parents want to murder me (if only to keep me here I suppose). Doesn’t matter that I lived abroad for a year and saw them a grand total of 3 times. No, apparently there aren’t as many “opportunities” in the Pacific Northwest. Wtf?

Here’s the thing: I’ve always assumed I would “end up” in New York. I mean, it’s New-effing-York. The Big Apple/city that never sleeps/land of good and plenty, blady blah blah blah. Maybe it’s because I grew up in an NYC suburb or because all the women in my family are crazy successful awesome ladies and New York is apparently the place to be if you’re going to be an independent woman with a snazzy career and briefcase to match.

U.S.A. vs Everywhere Else

I’ve seen more of the world than the United States. While I was living abroad in 2007 and 2008 I realized this weird and crazy fact, that is also mildly depressing. How could I not know anything about my own country? My globetrotter parents were adamant their kids would see the world and we totes went on road trips in big cars with fold down seats. I hated them (the road trips, not the seats. The seats were cool). Meaning that my memories of Yellowstone and the Southeast and Canada are not my fondest – apparently I have sleep tourettes. But only when I sleep in a tent with 5 other people, three of whom are smelly boys. I really wish I was kidding.

With that in mind, I thought the world revolved around New York. Both my parents (who I love and adore and ardently respect) worked here at big important jobs meeting big important people. New York was really my first experience with a big city. Then I moved to London and fell head over hells in love. A year later and I vacationed with my bestest friends in San Diego and fell in love again. And I’m starting to realize I don’t actually like New York, never mind love.

Things I Will Not Miss and Things I Currently Do

I miss nature and greenery not confined to a park. I’d be more than happy to get rid of the crowded streets, noise, the smell of urine, the smell of “meat”, dirty/run-down/rat-infested public transportation, scowls, feeling like a bitch all the time, being surrounded by bitches all the time and did I mention noise? I know I can’t do country living as I get bored quite easily but I need a city that’s a little more hippy and outdoorsy than the Big A. New York does indeed have everything and I know there are groups here that drive up to the Catskills but I need it to not be such a trek. I need something slower. Let’s brash and painfully obvious (i.e. pretentious).

Over the past six months I’ve learned to seriously rely on myself and trust my instincts but I’m nevertheless letting the doubts of my parents influence how I think. Will moving out of the Center of the Universe ruin all my hard work? Can I handle leaving all of my greatest and oldest friends and start off brand-spanking new? Can I even afford a move across the country?

Can I Do It Anywhere?

The beauty of freelance and social media work is that you can do it in New York or in a tiny cellar at a farmhouse about 10 miles south of Tikrit. It can’t be that difficult to find clients in Portland, right?

I interviewed Jane Friedman (based in Ohio) for a Digital Book World post and wrote: “She says her Midwestern location makes her feel a little removed and makes it much harder to keep up with the rapid changes happening in the industry. On the other hand, that distance also gives her a great perspective which, coupled with the job itself, means she’s not biased about which direction publishing goes in.”

So as of right now the plan is to head over there in March or April to scope the place out. Meet with people in publishing and social media, check out the bakeries, maybe tour a culinary school… If I love it, then hopefully I’ll be able to move out there in 2011. We’ll just have to see. If anyone has any advice, knows people in Oregon and/or has done something similar, pleasepleaseplease, advise away.

I wholeheartedly support the move. In 2005 I left my unsold condominium in Atlanta for a meagerly-paying job as a booking agent in a one-woman 'shop' in Seattle. Our clients were ultra-niche (bluegrass and old time string bands, etc.). The pay was small, and, a scant six months later I found myself driving an identical 15' Penske moving van back across the country and moving back into my still-unsold condominium.

One month after that inglorious return I was back in PR, which was fine. But the experience's lesson I remember and value most was this. I did something I really wanted to do, the work (albeit only six months worth) was incredibly rewarding, and I got to say I lived in Seattle.

Not that New York is blessed with fantastic weather, but do beware. Grey drizzly days outnumber days of sunshine by a horrific margin and I've heard that Portland has the highest suicide rate in the country.

But that for which you think you want or need from a place to live, you could do much worse. And there's the benefit of the satisfaction that so many explorers experience. "Hey, I did it, even if I turned back before the summit, I did it."

For what it's worth,
Paul

Excellent advice, Paul. I'm cool with the rain (lived in London for a year - made me totally depressed but I also love the rain), but not so much with suicide.

I feel like at 22 I should be doing shit like moving across the country and not knowing what I want to do with my life. And if I come back 6 months later? No biggie.

 Hi Marian,
Im definitely with ya on the moving to Oregon. Sometimes, you need to make some sacrifices in order to grow as a person and when I saw what you wrote, it was me back in 2003 whenever I decided to come with my limited English to the US, 19 year old , just graduated from College and with no idea where to start.

It was a long way and many many difficulties along the road but I found my dream job and I can tell you, it was so worth it to be away from home for so long. I miss my parents so much but then again I wanted to find ME and I did, I dont think I would have had that if I would have stayed in Peru. I have learned so much from my crazy trip and definitely earned the experiences I needed in order to reach my goals.

I have been in Oregon many times, wonderful city , very relaxing and has a lot of places where you can just drive all by yourself and feel so connected with nature. I will look up the info I got from over there and pass that to you. I met very nice open minded folks that made me like the city even more. I actually like Oregon better than San Francisco.

Take care and good luck in your new journey. I love the way you write things, it sounds just like you. Im glad that my english has improved a bit so at least I can send you a nice message that makes sense!
Love you sweetie,
Gaby

By most accounts, the 2010 Digital Book World Conference delivered on its promise of “practicality, not punditry”, but that doesn’t mean it was perfect. One notable misstep was “The New Farm System: Scouting Blogs and Self-Publishers for Commercial Books” session. With panelists representing ICM, Simon & Schuster and Gotham Books, expectations were high, but by the end, those expectations weren’t met and attendees were left with incomplete and unsatisfactory answers to many of their questions.

Most attendees went into the session already knowing that popular blogs get book deals; Julie and Julia was even referenced in the session’s description. With so many amazing blogs out there, though, finding one that can be successful offline is as much an art as it is science.

One of the major challenges publishers face in the digital age is that every piece of information you could possibly want is available somewhere online. Many have decided to see this as an opportunity, and according to Gotham Books Editor Patrick Mulligan, more than 50 blogs received book deals in 2009.

ForeWord Reviews publisher, Victoria Sutherland, moderating the panel, noted: “The problem with this session is that these guys don’t want to give away too many of their secrets.”

They were so intent on hoarding those secrets, in fact, that most of their discussion revolved around a few pretty obvious points:

Blogs most likely to get a publishing deal have great traffic, are highly regarded in their industry/niche, are linked to frequently, and are well written.

Okay, well…

It’s pretty easy to find a popular blog and give the blogger a book deal. What I was hoping to learn was what some of these blogs were doing that had generated so much traffic; what insights had their writers offered that made them so highly regarded; who was linking to them and why?

“If you’re funny & your voice is unique,” Mulligan offered, “people will come to it.”

“It was a lot easier a few years ago when there were fewer people on the web and fewer people looking,” offered ICM’s Kate Lee, choosing not to discuss her methodology in a room of publishing gurus looking for tips on finding the next bestseller.

I was hoping to learn how the panelists find the little-known gems, like design*sponge, the little blog that could, with its cult following and a forthcoming book (Fall/Winter 2010 – Artisan Books). How do those bloggers get discovered and get book deals?

During the Q&A, the audience had some great questions for the panelists, though many weren’t satisfactorily answered:

Is there a magic number for viewership when looking at blogs?

Mulligan said he usually sees viewership in the millions, but he also talked a lot about working with novelty blogs powered by user-generated-content (eg: Lolcats, Chuck Norris Facts). No one else gave numbers, though. Mulligan also mentioned that it’s hard to determine what the blog will look like when it becomes a book; you “have to judge the staying power.”

How do you make sure a book is not an exact replica of the site?

Simon & Schuster’s Sulay Hernandez noted that, with Smart Bitches Trashy Books, it’s not just the blog in book form, but also the author’s thoughts on the romance industry.

“No publisher wants to reproduce what is available for free online,” said Lee.

How much extra material can a blogger provide?

While the panelists all emphasized that added value is really important, Mulligan warned that you can’t go so far in the editing that it no longer resembles the blog.

When a blog is user submitted, how do you get permission?

For sites featuring user-generated-content, it can be difficult to get permissions, especially with photos where the person who submitted them isn’t the actual photographer. Some sites are easier than others, though; on Texts from Last Night, users give permission before submitting anything. Contractually speaking however, Lee says that it’s the author’s responsibility and that, in terms of plagiarism, it’s not something she’s really had a problem with.

What’s the process for finding blogs and what kind of advances are we looking at?

** Silence. **

I get why editors and agents would want to keep their numbers and sources close, but to be perfectly honest, this kind of attitude is a little disconcerting. Why agree to be a panelist if you’re just going to censor yourself?

According to the DBW website, the conference focused “specifically on the challenges and opportunities facing consumer book publishers… presenting strategies that can be implemented immediately.” With panels on everything from agents to eBooks to social media, I personally feel the conference more than delivered on its promise.

The New Farm System session, though, was an exception. The attendees came to hear how these talented editors and agents scouted new writers and interesting book ideas; what they, too, could do to take advantage of this great opportunity – but as Sutherland noted, the panelists weren’t looking “to give away too many of their secrets.”

Remember folks, we’re all supposed to be in this together.

A few days ago I wrote a post for the DBW blog, “A Gen Y Reaction to Macmillan’s Piracy Plan“. I obviously can’t condone piracy. But I can’t pretend that it’s not tempting and, in the words of one commenter, “tells you what your (potential) customers want.” Reaction was surprisingly around 50/50. Many (older) people felt that I was praising thieves and questioned how I would feel if people just expected me to work for free. Um… internships anyone?

However, I have a plea: pretty please will you people stop fighting change? This gets me every time. How do people not see this already? It’s not just publishing, it’s the world. As humans we hate change. Fine. I get it. But just because we don’t like something doesn’t stop it from happening. What, are you five? Covering your eyes doesn’t mean you’re invisible, kid. I wrote this comment in response to the HarperStudio blog where Debbie Stier Tumbled my post:

“Napack’s plan is like abstinence only education. Making condoms inaccessible doesn’t mean people are going to stop having sex. They’re just going to do it secretly and unsafely. It’s the same with pirates: just because we make it hard for them doesn’t mean they’ll stop. They’ll just find a way around it – a way that might be the less safe, less desirable route.”

There you go, food for thought my friends. Just don’t shoot me.

 "I obviously can’t condone piracy."

Okay, yes, piracy is illegal. So I can't condone it either. But it's funny how riled everyone gets when you suggest (based on the reality of the market as it exists today) that there is a place for "free" content in developing audiences. (See the commenter on Harper Studio's blog who very nicely explained how piracy brought manga to the US.)

Piracy seems to be about passion and people wanting access to content. If we make content (e-, audio, and print) cheap, easy and good, then we can tap into that passion *and* increase our market. (I'm thinking about how Napster led to iTunes.)

Usually, I can’t stand when people hunch over their computers and phones in the middle of real-live social situations. Not a hell of a lot makes me angrier if you pull out your cell phone and start typing away while I’m trying to actually talk to you.

Except if said social interaction is the Digital Book World conference.

Author Chris Kubica posted on the #dbw Twitter stream yesterday: “So at #dbw, what percent of the time are you spending making eye contact with people and what percent with your laptop/smartphone?” Which after reading I immediately looked up from my laptop to see mirror images of myself typing away. Apparently we at DBW are very good at multi-tasking. I know I heard every word. I think. In another tweet Kubica wrote, “Just remember: no tweets & pics of snacks & drinks. That’s the time to pocket the iPhone & use people skills.”

Part of me finds this depressing. I mean, a conference is for meeting people and socializing and awkwardly shaking hands. I recently posted about figuring out that I’m a wimp in groups of large people I don’t know, so maybe that’s my problem. I just didn’t have the cojones to meet enough people. On the other (and significantly larger) hand, this is kind of what DBW is all about. So many people not at this week’s event were following along with the constantly updated Twitter stream, asking questions and commenting how awesome it sounded. (It was.)

In what I assume – and seriously hope – was a joke, Alice Pope posted a photo of the boxed lunches we all received. Okay,so there are many things both hilarious and wrong with this, but I eventually come back to the same conclusion: what is the point of social media if you can’t social with people who aren’t in your exact geographic location?

Editors, publicists, marketers and authors alike felt connected to conference, almost like they were there. This is despite their apparent cubicle containment. This is also thanks to the many publishing tweeps who furiously typed out the most important points of each panel, commentator and weird joke. None of this would have been possible without the multitasking hunchers sharing up-to-the-minute info on conference happenings. Meaning this post, by definition, is late.

I for one got a hell of a lot out of the conference and that’s a direct result of both the panels themselves and the running commentary of those in attendance.

Today I found out that I am a wimp. And that I would most definitely kill to have the ability to work a room.

Today was Day 1 of Digital Book World’s first annual conference in NYC and it was beyond awesome. You’d think that a conference starting at 8am and ending at 5pm would bore you half to death but that was surprisingly not the case. I listened with rapt attention to every word and wrote a grand total of 10,000 words of notes (I wish this was an exaggeration).

After the initial speeches by hotshots like Brian Napack of Macmillan, I attended three separate panels:

Getting Comfortable in the Niches: Reports from Publishers Working Their Verticals

Optimizing eBooks: Cost-Effective Enhancements, Updates and Multimedia Options

Synergizing the Book and Web: Books Plus In the 21st Century

I could write about the rock stars in these panels until, well, the cows come home, but that’s what the DBW blog is for so you’ll have to stay tuned. What I want to talk about though (and is really of no interest to you) is the fact that I pretty much only met two or three people today and maybe five yesterday at the Bourbon. Apparently I’m a little shy. Wtf? It’s weird, I didn’t know this about myself until I entered a bar full of publishing gurus and felt like a 12-year-old playing dress up in grownup clothes.

To top it all off I actually recognized most of the faces in the room. Due to my crazy (and probably not so healthy) blog fetish, I’ve read all the things these people have to say. I follow them on Twitter, but we’ve never actually met. And here I go not introducing myself to anyone, totally lacking in the business card department and even when some nice person does engage me in conversation it’s basically like talking to a toddler with all the insight I have to say. These people are geniuses. Well, scratch that. If they were all geniuses publishing wouldn’t be in the pickle it’s in, but still, there were some brilliant speakers today and fingers crossed tomorrow I’ll manage to crawl out of my hidey-hole and make some friends. Please? Anyone?

Don't let it bug you - I was at least that shy at World's Fair Use Day two weeks ago. If some kind soul hadn't taken pity on me at the happy hour afterwards, I barely would have spoken to anyone.

 Dearest Marian,

So you are a social NETWORKING guru but cant talk to people in person...you cant let people miss out on your awesomeness!! Tomorrow, when you recognize a face I want you to go up to that person, introduce yourself, mention something you recently read on their blog/what you like about their tweets or whatever you remember about them. Possibly mention some panel you went, some issue about the conference you are at... I mean you are at the same conference as them...theres plenty to talk about.

I expect an email with at least 10 names tomorrow.

Love,
your friend who is at awe with you / wants other people to know how great you are
