Contest! Win a copy of Petty Magic by Camille DeAngelis

by Marian Schembari on October 13, 2010

I don’t do enough contests here, I know, so I figured it was high time to rectify the situation. I get so hopped up on social media that I often forget to blog about other things that make me happy. Like music and cupcakes and books.

Enter Camille DeAngelis.

Camille is one of my authors, but that doesn’t make me love her latest book any less. The woman writes stories I want to crawl up and live in – think Neil Gaiman but slightly more ladylike and lots more outspoken. Basically, Camille is the kind of author that reminds me why I’m in publishing.

I’ve already given away my copy of her latest, Petty Magic, because it’s so good I needed a friend to read it, so Camille has graciously agreed to give away a copy and one of the fabulous t-shirts she’s created at CafePress. Big prizes!

About Petty Magic

I suck at book reviews and, since I’m not in high school, I’m allowed to steal the synopsis from elsewhere. So thanks Booklist, for this great explanation of my new favorite story:

Evelyn Harbinger is a witch, but not one of those sinister ones with gnarled fingers and warts on her nose. She uses her powers for good, healing the injured and helping people fall in love. At age 149, she has enjoyed a life span nearly twice that of mere mortals. Though her typical appearance is grandmotherly and sweet, if Evelyn is attracted to a man, she can transform herself, albeit temporarily, into a voluptuous, thirtysomething siren. That’s just what she does when she meets Justin, who works at an antique shop near her sister’s bed-and-breakfast in [New Jersey]. Bright, handsome Justin bears an eerie resemblance to Jonah, Evelyn’s partner in espionage (and romance) when the two served the Allies during WWII. Evelyn begins to wonder whether Justin may be an incarnation of her late beau, who was killed during a raid. Critics have compared novelist DeAngelis (whose works include the acclaimed Mary Modern) to a modern-day Mary Shelley…

My (Glowing) Review

I adored everything about this book and read it lightning fast because not only was it compelling, but I’m a sucker for witches. Petty Magic is beautifully written and had this bewitching, old-fashioned feel, reminding me of fairy tales I read as a child. Except this time there is a slightly darker, more adult edge, which suited me perfectly. There’s a World War II back story, marionettes that come to life, a secret city and the most incredible antiques store ever. “Enchanting” is probably the best word to describe it.

So let’s go about giving it away. One lucky reader will receive a copy of Petty Magic and a t-shirt from Camille’s Cafepress store with the “slogan” of your choice. The main character, Eve, has some fabulous lines. My favorite: “I may not be all that picky, but I draw the line at the clap.”

How to Enter

Just leave a comment with your favorite childhood fairytale. Easy peasy. If you want an extra entry just his retweet this post and be on your merry way. A name will be randomly chosen this Friday, October 15th, so make sure to get your entries in before then! You can also just buy a copy of Petty Magic here.

I’ll start us off: My favorite childhood fairytale is/was The Lady of the Linden Tree. Given to me by my mother and still one of my all-time favorite books, Linden Tree is filled with obscure fairy tales and is, sadly, out of print.

So what’s yours?

UPDATE: Entries are now closed! And the winner is… Alison!! Thanks so much y’all for entering. Who knows, might do another contest soon ;-)

Book Blowout Contest! I can’t take it all with me…

by Marian Schembari on June 28, 2010

There’s this bookshelf in my room (left) that looks like a tornado hit it. This doesn’t include the piles of books next to my bed (I have two bedside tables), in my closet, or on my desk. I’ve been a huge reader all my life and take pride in my book collection. Unfortunately, every few years I need to do a mass donate to Goodwill because I would literally be drowning in books otherwise. Add to that the fact that I work with authors, agents and publishers, and this year has been insane in terms of book accumulation.

I’m moving soon though, and can’t take all these wonderful books with me. I’d leave them here, but who knows the next time I’ll be in the States. Some of these books I’ll never be able to part with, but some of them have been read, enjoyed, and are now just taking up space on my shelves.

So I figured I’d do a huge giveaway! There are some amazing books in my possession, and what better way to spread the love than to hold a contest? For now I’m only including the books that I think you lovely readers would like. You know, cuz I always have your best interests at heart.

The Rules

There really aren’t a hell of a lot. Below I’m posting a list of the books, so just leave a comment with the book of your choice. I can’t guess how many entries I’ll get, but if you want an extra chance at winning just retweet this post. For example, The incredibly beautiful & generous @marianschembari is doing a massive book giveaway on her blog. Click to enter: http://bit.ly/9Ebz6o (Or something along those lines.)

The Books

Social Media 101 by Chris Brogan. I reviewed this book back in March and really loved it. It’s a great resource to go back to again and again if you use social media. If you read Brogan’s blog, you’ll most likely love this book.

Flawless by Scott Andrew Selby and Greg Campbell. The subtitle for this book is “Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History.” No joke, it’s awesome. Here’s the book trailer:

Free Agent Nation by Daniel Pink. This book is one of the reasons I struck out on my own as a freelancer. A friend recommended it to me when I was struggling with the whole “9-to-5-vs-freedom” thing and I love Pink’s thoughts on all of us as free agents.

Cleaving by Julie Powell. Unfortunately, this book is no Julie & Julia, but it’s cooking themed and I love me some food memoirs. Granted, I’m a hardcore vegetarian, but it was still interesting to read about the meat industry from a butcher’s perspective. Something I never would have learned otherwise!

The Shallows by Nicholas Carr. A really wonderful book that was sent to me after I wrote about my internet stress. Written by the man who wrote the Atlantic cover story, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?“, Shallows is required reading for anyone who works on the internet all day.

American Subversive by David Goodwillie. This book is a freaking rush. A novel the Associated Press called “a triumphant work of fiction”, American Subversive is actually impossible to put down. The very relevant love story between a gossip blogger and a terrorist. I’ll let the book trailer speak for itself:

That’s it for now! So, leave a comment below with the book of your choice. Tweet the contest to receive a second entry, but do so before Friday July 2 when the contest ends. And (don’t feel obligated to do this, but…) if you are so inclined to donate to the “Help Marian Mail 5 Hardcover Books to Loyal Readers Fund”, you can do so here:

Contest! Help Me Pick a Tagline

by Marian Schembari on March 19, 2010

I just spent 2 hours staring at my computer trying to think of a clever and smart tagline for my blog. Am getting a fancy new header and I need a bad ass tagline to showcase who I am and why I’m different. But I can’t think of anything that doesn’t sound ridiculous, cocky or sales-y (3 things I hate).

Then I realized that the power of social media is to rally together, right?! So who wants to help a lady out?

Goals:

Short and sweet tagline that combines both what I do professionally and how I incorporate my personality into my blog posts. That’s it. I’ve got nothing. Ideas?

Here are some taglines I ADORE:

The Bloggess: “Like Mother Theresa, Only Better.”

Domestic Sluttery: “The home and lifestyle blog for women who have better things to do.”

Chapman/Chapman: “The Venn diagram of literature, new media, & some cool, mind-blowing 3rd thing.” (this is on his Twitter bio, but whatever)

Contest ends Monday night. Email me, @ me on Twitter or leave a comment. Winner gets a $15 iTunes gift card, and if you could tweet this and spread the love, well, awesome. The more the merrier!

Ready? Set? Go.

UPDATE: And the winner is…. Scott Ripley!!! Telling it like it isn’t. But should be. Think it fits me down to a T and the second I heard it I knew. So thanks Scott, you are the best of the best. The tagline king. As a reward, besides me undying love and devotion, you get presents! And by presents I mean music in the form of a card :)

I want to thank everyone SO SO SO much for all your help. I’m a miserable failure when it comes to this stuff so it was amazing to get everyone’s juices flowing and see how you all see me. And a shout out to Ryan Rancatore: please tell me you do this for a living. A genius, you are.
