I think I actually need to put together an epic list of reasons why I love Twitter. Because every week I read awesome stories (like this one on Healthy Tipping Point) about fun, quirky, useful, life-changing things that happen because of Twitter.
In January I wrote about how Twitter saved my blog. And every day I’m reminded of the power connection.
This past Saturday night I attend a Josh Pyke gig. Now, if you don’t know Josh Pyke, he’s awesome. When I finally got my ass to Australia I knew I had to see him live. As luck would have it, he was touring Sydney during my two week stint here.
Anyway, halfway through the show, Josh paused and said, “Is Chris here?” (can’t remember the guy’s name, so we’re going with Chris). Some dude raised his hand.
Josh said, “For those of you who don’t know Twitter, it’s a thing on the internet. And Chris here mentioned that it was his birthday today.” And so Josh Pyke, one of Australia’s top singer-songwriters, sang Happy Birthday (along with the rest of the audience) to some dude named Chris.
All because of Twitter.
Doncha just love stories like that? THIS is why I love social media.
Alright, so maybe my musicalposts on this blog aren’t my most popular (the last one got something like 30 hits), but sharing my favorite tracks with you makes me super happy. So there.
Up this week is a recent discovery of mine, Anna Ternheim. While I found her album, Leaving On a Mayday (2008), to be a bit boring, No, I Don’t Remember is so freaking wonderful I had to share. I unfortunately couldn’t find a proper music video but it’s such a gorgeous track, so sit back and listen to one of my iTunes Most Played. I’d highly recommend turning up the volume, especially around the 1:20 mark – it’s just one of those songs.
My boyfriend says he’s noticed that my favorite songs “ache”. This is probably true, but I like to feel music in my achey soul. Sam, however, has excellent musical tastes and you should probably check out his blog (though he hasn’t updated recently).
What about you? What are your favorite “achey” songs?
For the life of me I can’t remember how Josh Pyke came under my radar. I wish I did so I could give a great big bear hug to whoever did the recommending.
While I was working at that museum in Manhattan over the winter, there was a lot of walking in the snow. Sometime in February we had this huge blizzard and the entire city was weirdly quiet. On my walk from the subway station to the museum I listened to “The Lighthouse Song” and now all I can think of when I hear it is big, fat flakes and the craziest city on earth at a standstill when covered in snow.
If you thought I couldn’t get any mushier than that, I’d also like to point out that one of my favorite lines EVER is in this little diddy: “When I should be leaning against you, deciding on things to get done, and you should be leaning on fountains and filling my space up and breathing the air from my lungs.” Swoon.
Because last week’s musical selection was such a success (not) I’m doing it again! I will force my multiple passions on you if it kills me!
Up next is Laura Marling‘s “Ghosts”, another folksy favorite of mine. Enjoy…
Okay, so the video’s a little weird, but do you recognize those handsome gentlemen in the background? That would be Musical Loves of My Life Mumford & Sons!!!
